This week apple released a new iPhone, iPhone 6 and a new iWatch. The apple logo is very famous, but do you understand its joke? A simple joke in English and Japanese is when a word or expression sounds like another word but has a different meaning. This is called a pun (だじゃれ). A famous Japanese one is:
- A tangerine on an aluminum can.
- アルミ(arumi) means “aluminium”, 缶(kan) means “a can”, so “arumi kan” means “an aluminium can”. Also ある(aru) means “exists” and みかん.
The apple logo is a pun too. It is missing a part, someone has taken a “bite” (咬む). But “byte” (バイト) has is a word which sounds the same and means a unit of computer information.
Can you think of any other puns?
